Activity # 18 Wikis
This was really interesting. Some of the library wikis were excellent.
The wiki created by the 10th grade English class was a great example. It showed how useful, at a classroom level, a wiki can be. It allows students to work collaboratively on a project or assignment as well as share helpful information. The ability of the classroom teacher, in this case Mr Miller, to communicate with his class in a collaborative manner, rather than with each individual was useful. In using a wiki with a class it is essential that access can be restricted.
The use of a wiki to outline a school’s programs and policies would be helpful, in much the same way as a non-interactive web site is now used. Day to day administrative tasks could also be communicated in the wiki. Staff and faculty meeting agendas and meeting schedules could be incorporated as well as the myriad of events that happen in the life of a school community.
I can see how a great many individual emails could be prevented if an interactive and collaborative tool like wiki was in place. Once again the need to restrict access when required is essential.
I was really impressed with the Yarra Plenty Reader’s Advisory wiki - so much useful information. Lots of reasons to keep visiting the site.
